The medieval city of Carcassonne is a fortified town which shelters about a hundred inhabitants. It is enclosed by two curtain walls interspersed by 52 towers and barbicans.
Inside the cité : The basilica of Saints Nazaire and Celse : the former cathedral has a combination of Romanesque nave and side-aisles with a Gothic choir and transept. It shelters marvellous stained-glass windows, some dating from the 13th century. The castle : Built during the 12th and 13th centuries on the western side of the primitive fortification, over the highest point of the hill, it is protected by a curtain wall over which wooden hoardings have been reconstituted.
