Medieval music during the time of the troubadours

The Quercorb museum is devoted to the history and economy of the Quercorb area. Two historical orientations are developed.
In the first part, there is a presentation of daily life at the beginning of the 20th century in the Quercorb. The first part of the visit is to the reconstitution of a kitchen, element around which lives revolved at that period in history. The presentation is surprisingly ‘alive' thanks to sound effects. Local trades are also presented in the replica of the Nébias forge, the explanation of jet work (to make black jewellery which was very fashionable), a turner's workshop and a display of horn-comb manufacture.
In the second part, the museum explains the art of the troubadours and their profane medieval music. The Instrumentarium reproduces the Musicians' Room in the keep of the castle of Puivert. The sculptures of the eight musicians have been copied so that you may observe the medieval instruments more closely. These instruments have found a second life through the archeological interpretation of the sculptures and the skill of contemporary instrument makers. Selected pieces from 14th century music will take you back to the court of Gaston Phoebus. A video : "from stone to the breath of life” retraces the development of the Instrumentarium. Troubadour songs by Marcabru or Guiraut Riquier illustrate the sonority of the Occitan language. The songs have been calligraphed on goat-skins and translated for an easier understanding of courtly poetry and love.
Models of the castle of Puivert and its keep, showing the parts which have disappeared over time ; as well as documents, mouldings and photographs ; explain the history of the monument and of the Cathars in the Quercorb.
Finally, the recently re-developed orchard is an invitation to walk among the different varieties of fruit trees, including pears known as Curés (Priests) or Bons-Chrétiens (Good Christians). A brandy still and a video showing ‘Aristide', the travelling stiller of the Quercorb, complete the visit about fruit-picking and its transformation into brandy (eau-de-vie).
