The entry ticket gives access to the castle of Quéribus and to the Achille Mir theatre in Cucugnan, to see the ‘Sermon of the Priest of Cucugnan', a story told in virtual images. An easy walking path leads up to the castle entrance. Quéribus is an excellent example of military architecture with its narrow doors with spaces above to hit the enemy over the head and its arrow and cannon loopholes. Objects for everyday living have also been conserved : cisterns, fireplaces, residences… The visit comprises narrow stairways and corridors, built up or cut out in the stone. The polygonal keep is famous for its ‘pillar room'. Lit by a wide chamfered mullion window, it is designed in a primitive Gothic style. Its vault rests on a strong circular pillar ending in a palm leaf shape. A spiral staircase enables access to the terrace at the top of the keep. An unforgettable panoramic view offers itself to the visitor : the Mediterranean Sea, the Corbières foothills and the Pyrenean mountain chain. Orientation tables and information panels help you discover the site. For a personalized tour, audio-guides give you the chance to explore, freely, the site's history and architecture. In the village centre, a house has been transformed into a pocket theatre. There are projections of the story of the Priest of Cucugnan, made famous by Alphonse Daudet in his ‘Lettres de mon moulin' (‘Letters from my mill'). The theatre is dedicated to Achille Mir, local writer from the Aude, author of an Occitan version in verse of this short masterpiece of humour and poetry. The show lasts twenty minutes and combines sophisticated techniques for the images and the voice of the storyteller, Henri Gougaud. Cucugnan, dominated by the silhouette of its active wind mill, invites you to see an astonishing statue of the pregnant Virgin Mary, as well as its streets with their evocative names: Traverse de l'abbé Martin.
